Kaihua Bush Yurt is a rustic off grid home with 12v solar power, rain water catchment and composting toilet.
You'll have the yurt, kitchen, bath/shower room, toilet and large yard to yourselves.
Enjoy rivers, bookshops, cafes, a bakery, Remutaka cycle trail, Wairarapa Moana wetlands, wineries, the train line and much more on your doorstep while still nestled in native bush.
Kaihua Bush Yurt offers more than just accommodation; it's a unique experience and an opportunity to connect with nature.

Būstas
The Yurt is a beautiful space to spend time in. Cool in the summer and warm in the winter, when the large wood stove is lit, the Yurt is very comfortable. For extra privacy (from our one friendly neighbor) roll down the wooden blinds otherwise rise with the sun. The Yurt's central feature is the skylight or 'dome' which gives you a calming awareness of the sky above. We built the Yurt to be our family home and loved that we were constantly connected with nature. You'll hear bird song, the nearby river, rain and wind all from inside the Yurt. Please be aware that on particularly windy nights you still experience the elements! You can definitely hear strong wind against the Yurt walls and earplugs are provided. The Yurt contains all lounge/bedroom/dinning room essentials while also feeling spacious, e.g. practice yoga or have your little ones run around in the open space. Native and recycled hard wood floors have a natural finish while all fabric in the yurt is either cotton or wool.

Please note standard appliance 3-prong (240v) plug sockets are not available. The Yurt is powered by 12 volt solar and all sockets are for 12v appliances only. The Yurt has 2 USB chargers for your phones, a car/cigarette charger, LED lights, a record player (with bluetooth) and WiFi.

The detached kitchen, set behind the Yurt and connected by a deck, contains all basic essentials for cooking a family meal. It's a practical and open space and through both the doors and skylight you have a view of trees. The kitchen contains a large double sink, a 4 hob gas burner, a 12v mini refrigerator/freezer (large chilly bin also provided), settings for 6 people, recycling and compost bins, and plenty of storage space. The sink's filtered water is heated by gas and should be used sparingly as it is rain water. Please conserve water and electricity wherever possible. The kitchen, like all of the rooms, has 12 volt power only. In terms of power the kitchen consists of lights and a refrigerator only.

The clawfoot bath with a brass shower head is set in a glass house. The bath/shower has curtains for privacy. The filtered water is heated by gas and should be used sparingly as it is rain water. The bathroom has solar lights. Please conserve water and electricity as much as possible.

The toilet is a standalone compostable toilet. It is beautifully rustic and with the correct care should be odor free and clean. The room contains the toilet and directions on how to use it, sawdust, solar lighting and a small sink for washing hands.

The surrounding property is an excellent place to spend time in. There is a hammock hanging from one of two huge Paulownia trees and a skateboard swing in the other. Find a place to sit in the wild grass, the garden or the back deck. Watch the birds and bees do their thing and maybe even find something rare and special like a Puriri moth.

Together these 5 living spaces form our hand built home that we outgrew. Around the home you will find many unique elements such as our broken salad bowl from our wedding tiled in the toilet room, up-cycled materials that lived a previous life such as windows and doors, gifted books and art. These unique features made it home and we hope you enjoy them too.

Svečio prieiga
The whole fenced area around the yurt will be yours - if you want to explore a bit further onto the property, we'd be happy to show you around.

Kiti svarbūs dalykai
Our water is filtered and UV treated so it is potable from the tap. However it does have a tinge of brown from kanuka leaves - this is most apparent when taking a bath. We have provided an additional water filter for drinking water if you're not comfortable with the colour.

Please leave all gates as you find them for the duration of the stay.

Western Lake, Wellington, Naujoji Zelandija

Featherston is at the foot of the Remutaka mountain range making it unique for the area as native bush and swimmable rivers are close by. Featherston is known as New Zealand's 'Book Town' so you will find seven different book shops including our favourite; Loco Coffee and Books.

My husband Oliver and I moved to New Zealand from the US in 2014 for me to pursue a Masters degree at Victoria University of Wellington. We intended to stay in New Zealand for only two years. Seven years later here we still are with two young girls and a home in the Wairarapa. We're lucky enough to own a small block of native bush nestled between the Remutaka and Tararua mountain ranges; the gateway to the Wairarapa. When we're not working on the land or chasing our girls around we enjoy being at the coast and in the mountains. Passionate about reducing our footprint on the earth, playing music and eating good fresh food.

We live on the property with our two young girls (<2 years old) but we are round the corner and up the hill so you won't see us or hear us unless you would like to!
We are often home so if you need anything we can be with you in minutes.
