My name is Daren Falter. My wife Vanessa and I own The Columns family vacation rental in Steilacoom Washington which is now only available to rent longer term (1-12 months).
I discovered the town of Steilacoom Washington by accident. I was coming back from SeaTac airport driving to Olympia and there was a lot of traffic on the freeway. It was rush-hour. I decided to take a random detour to see if I could get around the mess. Somehow I ended up on the Dupont-Steilacoom road heading west toward the sunset. Soon I found myself driving through nothing but Douglas fir trees, not a building or a home in sight. As a crested a hill, I looked down through a tunnel of trees to what appeared to be the Puget Sound. I had no idea where I was. As I got closer to the water I realized I was driving into a ferry terminal. I quickly turned right into the quaint, seaside town of Steilacoom Washington. This breathtaking town stole my heart. Everybody in Steilacoom has waterfront view because it’s built on a hill. All the stores and shops and restaurants still have that small-town community feel. You won’t find Walmart or Costco or Bed Bath and Beyond in Steilacoom. Just mom and pops establishments, a family run coffeehouse, the local bar and grill, one dentist, a small post office, City Hall, one church, and the Steilacoom Museum. I knew someday I would own a home here.
When we first acquired The Columns, we thought about living here. It’s such a beautiful and peaceful home. It’s a place to invite loved ones. It’s a place to build memories with children and grandchildren. But as we spent time in the home and started to purchase furniture worthy of it charm, we realized that this home had to be shared. We couldn’t keep it to ourself. It’s much bigger than that. It’s much bigger than us. This home is a memory of earlier times. It’s a museum to the men and women who founded this community. It’s a showcase of the Pacific Northwest and it’s attractions. It’s a place of healing peace and reflection for everyone. It’s too special to keep to ourselves.
So we decided to turn it into a short term rental. We welcome everyone with the invitation to…come and stay for a little while, escape, heal, rest, recharge your batteries, find perspective, be inspired, find your ambition, reconnect to the people and things you love. This home is like a temple to us. It is sacred. It has a powerful spirit. We know this because we feel it every time we walk into it. When the Town of Steilacoom recently decided to not allow short-term rentals anymore, we chose to keep the home as a longer term rental (1-12 months).
