Ką veiksite

Let's play tradional instruments, Koto harp plus shamisen guiter and enjoy tea ceremony with high-quality Matcha and seasonal Japanese sweets!

The traditional Japanese stringed instrument, the koto, is renowned for both its healing tones and elegant shape. During this workshop, you will have a chance to play the koto. After playing the koto, you will be served matcha green tea and seasonal Japanese sweets in a tea ceremony by a master from the Urasenke tea school. After enjoying the tea and sweets, you will also have chance to play Shamisen, Japanese traditional instrument like guitar. This cultural experience is set in a cozy small Japanese house beside the brook near Heian shrine and Art museum area.

I have been doing another Koto workshops with tea ceremony in Ginkakuji area. And the participants enjoyed our workshops very much. This is the URL of the workshop.

Hi I'm Yumi. I’m a Koto music performer and composer. And I’m also tea ceremony master. I have founded a company that supports artists and craftsmen in Japanese traditional culture. When I was young, I managed an IT company. In those days I took the last train home every night. And my consolations were practicing the Koto harp and the tea ceremony. I was able to forget my problems and free my mind, which refreshed me. The more deeply I studied them, the more the rich world of Japanese culture enchanted me. I believe the traditional has the power to make people relax and feel happy.

Kur būsite

We invite you to our house for our workshops. The small Japanese house along small beautiful river called "Shirakawa" has a nostalgic atmosphere, as if invited by an old acquaintance in Kyoto. Our house is near Higashiyama station of Subway Tozai line. Please take No.1 exit and it takes about 4 minutes walk from the exit.
You can enjoy Japanese tradtional music and tea ceremony in a small group or private.

It was a very intimate and casual experience in Yumi’s home. We enjoyed the combination of tea ceremony and music playing to deepen the cultural experience. She offered some education that allowed us to further enjoy our time in Japan.

The koto experience with Yumi-san was one of the highlights of my time in Japan and I'll always remember it fondly. I had played koto briefly while studying abroad many years ago but had since found it difficult to find teachers or lessons in where I live. The session with Yumi-san not only brought back incredible bonding between me and the musical instrument, but also introduced me to new knowledge I didn't know, such as the history, types of koto and new songs. I think this is the perfect embodiment of what AirBnb experience could be at its best: cultural exchange and immersion guided by a true expert. Yumi-san's deep expertise and detailed guidance was superb. We played several songs in duet together and I was overjoyed. Afterwards, she performed a little tea ceremony for me (needless to say the sweets and tea were amazing). It was the first tea ceremony I observed and she kindly walked me through some key concepts of it. We chatted about culture, music, Japanese traditions so comfortably over tea and sweets and I enjoyed the moments so much. Yumi-san wrapped up the experience with also a little introduction to Shamisen, which was more difficult for me but also sounded wonderful. Overall, this experience was unforgettable. The location and the building (a traditional Japanese-style house with tasteful decor located along a little river), the teaching and interaction (Yumi-san was so attentive and detailed), the flexibility (I ran late due to traffic but Yumi-san was flexible to start slightly later), the level of information (she prepared some English slides about koto) and just her great hospitality and deep understanding on the topics (music instruments and tea ceremony). If you enjoy music and are in Kyoto, I'll definitely recommend this experience!

A fun and unique introduction to Japanese music instruments. Besides that, she shared some history facts about the instruments which was very interesting. The tea ceremony in the end was the cherry on top.
