Ką veiksite

A very special cultural and artistic experience await you when you sign up for for this class with Master Kumu (teacher) Dalani Tanahy. Guests will be greeted at Kilohana Farm in beautiful Makaha where the learning of art Hawaiian kapa making begins. You will learn about the history and use of the "Wauke" or Paper mulberry trees, along with plants used for dyes and will have a chance to work briefly in the wauke patch clearing and replanting. After that you will be able to process bark into the beginnings of kapa using traditional methods and tools. While your kapa dries we will learn Hawaiian printing and design styles and you will be able to print your own tote bag that will be great for shopping or the beach. After printing your bag we will learn about natural dye making and you will be able to add beautiful colors to the kapa you made. Everything you make is yours to take home as a reminder of this rare and special experience. Because kapa making is a very time and resource-heavy art, there are relatively few practitioners. I am very happy to teach and share what I do and look forward to seeing you!
Other things to note
Dress to be cool and comfortable and maybe a hat for when we are in the garden. Please let me know at booking if anyone is in a wheelchair or needs extra assistance. I recommend you also bring water and snack and mosquito repellant.

I have been a practitioner and teacher of the art of Hawaiian bark cloth or kapa making, for over 25 years. This was once considered a lost art, but it has been brought back and is seen in art, fashion and design here in Hawaii and around the world. I grow my own source plants for this art and have traveled globally sharing and teaching about kapa. I was recently made a Master Teacher at the University of Hawaii, West Oahu, not because of professor credentials but because of my work and contributions to the perpetuation of kapa making. I was also a featured artist in the 2011 movie "Ka Hana Kapa", and in the 2018 BBC series "Handmade-Kapa". Reviving a lost art means making sure it is never lost again. By teaching and sharing this art locally and around the world, we insure the future survival of Hawaiian Kapa making.

Kur būsite

Kilohana Farm is on the leeward west side of O`ahu in the "ahupua`a" or land division known as Wai`anae. This side of the island is not usually lush and green like the windward side but has its own rugged beauty nonetheless. Before or after our class, take some time to visit our beautiful beaches, hike around Ka`ena Point where the road ends, and enjoy the calm beauty of this place. And donʻt forget some shave ice at a shop here in Makaha!l

It was bit hard to find the entrance to her workshop but the overall experience was interesting and unique! We started with peeling the skin off of a paper mulberry tree and made it into Kapa. We also learned about pattern making :) Dalani shared many stories of herself as a Kapa maker. If you are a crafty person and enjoy learning culture, this could be a good addition to your trip, especially as a family activity. Oh, and don't for get to bring bug spray!

What a wonderful, educational experience! I had such a fantastic time learning about how to make Kapa from tree to finished product. Dalani is very informative and thoughtful person. I walked away with a friend and an interest to learn more about how to create products from kapa. The experience has something for all ages and I will be to bring my nieces and nephews to learn from her when they visit.
